Arizona State University has hired Molly Miller, the former head coach of Grand Canyon University, as its next women's basketball coach.
The hiring comes after the firing of Natasha Adair, who was ASU’s head coach for the last three seasons. For the three seasons under Adair, ASU had a combined record of 29-62 and failed to make the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons.
On the other hand, Miller, who spent five seasons with the GCU Lopes, had a total record of 117-38. Over the five seasons, the Lopes seemed to get better each season.
This includes the 2024-2025 season when GCU took off.
After starting the season 2-2, the Lopes did the unthinkable and went on a 30-game win streak. This winning streak carried into the Western Athletic Conference. Miller was able to claim the first-ever WAC title for GCU and its first bid into the NCAA tournament.
The Lopes and Miller, after landing the 13th seed, faced 4th-seeded Baylor. Unfortunately for GCU, its magical season and 30-game winning streak came to an end after losing 73-60 to the Bears.
ASU watched Miller’s historic success and decided to pull the trigger in hopes of turning its women's basketball program around.
As for Miller, she only has to go 20 miles down the road to her new home at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, where she will instill her ideologies on day one.
In an X post where Miller said goodbye to GCU, she gave her thanks to the community and program she helped take a big leap.
“Our success over these seasons was truly a team effort,” Miller said. “I will forever be proud to have been part of this extraordinary family.”
