The Corona del Sol Aztecs are now 9-0 on the season making the Desert Vista Thunder drop to 4-7.

Although the Aztecs won each set, the Thunder played hard in the first set, challenging the Aztecs until the end. The Thunder led for a while in the middle of the set forcing the Aztecs to catch up. Both teams played with vigor, fighting for the win, as the score kept tying up. Down 24-22, the Aztecs went off and scored four straight points, taking the win in the set 26-24.

“They were playing at a high level. They were passing really well, and I think we came out a little flat. But it was just kinda like ‘okay let’s grind’. That's one of our things, just keep going if we're not playing our best, and if we keep going, that's when we turn things around,” Corona del Sol Head Coach Ben Maxfield said.

The Aztecs picked up the pace in the second set taking a lead and running with it. Finishing the set 25-18.

The Aztecs bulldozed through the last set, blowing out the Thunder 25-4. This week's player of the game, senior outside and opposite hitter Alyssa Aguayo, had a significant role in finishing the match in that fashion.

“I just want to go into every game dominant and fierce, and attack every set I get. We have really great setters on our team, so they set me up and I can get lots of kills,” Aguayo said.

She is within the top 15 in the state for kills, with power behind her hits making it very difficult for opponents to get a hand under the ball.

Aguayo is committed to the University of Illinois, where she will continue her volleyball career.

This year’s Corona del Sol is a force to be reckoned with, with several star players looking to keep up their dominant performance and win the title at the end of the season. But in order to do that, they first have to achieve their “little goals”, according to Coach Maxfield.

“One of them is finishing top four in the power rankings so that we can host all of our playoff matches. With that in mind, when we play matches like this, we need this win if we're going to be able to get to our next step to get to the state championship,” Maxfield said.

Every game counts for the Aztecs, and they are showing how bad they want to see their goals come to fruition.
