In this week's game of the week, presented by Athletes Unlimited, the still undefeated Corona del Sol Aztecs will visit the Desert Vista Thunder.
The Aztecs are ranked fourth in state with an 8-0 record, cruising through the season. The Thunder have had a tough schedule recently, and are 4-6 coming off a loss last week to the No. 1 ranked team, Xavier Prep.
Corona del Sol is a powerhouse team that proves its dominance every game. The Aztecs have not shown any signs of slowing down yet.
Junior Middle Blocker Hayden Conner is ranked No. 12 in the nation for hitting percentage with 0.500. She is also eighth in the state for blocks with 61, and 13th in the state for kills with 205. She trails her teammate Alyssa Aguayo, who is 12th in the state for kills with 210.
This Corona del Sol team led by championship coach Ben Maxfield, will bring a high level of competition to Desert Vista.
Head coach Audra Slemmer played volleyball at Grand Canyon University and has been a high school coach for 16 years, so the Thunder have a leader who knows the game well. The Thunder must showcase their best performance against the Aztecs in order to challenge them and prove they are fierce competitors.
Sophomore middle and outside hitter Maryella Owens has been consistent with her blocking and attacking skills this season, as a young key player for the Thunder. Junior libero Kalli Lipo is ranked 11th in the state for digs with 238, so we can expect her to try to make some saves for Desert Vista as well.
Desert Vista has a tough matchup at home, but the team will have to show its potential and play up to the competition with Corona del Sol.
