Steve Vaught, who led the Arizona College Prep Knights to the 4A state championship game this past season in just his first year at the helm, has stepped down.

Arizona College Prep Principal Rob Bickes announced the coaching change in an email to parents Tuesday. A copy of that email has been obtained by Hypamark.

"I am writing to inform you that our Head Football Coach, Steve Vaught, has made the decision to step down as the leader of our schools' football program and pursue professional opportunities outside the field of education," the letter said.

"Earlier today, the members of the football team and coaching staff were informed of his decision."

The shocking move by Vaught comes after his first season as head coach of the program. In 2022, he left Chandler -- where he served as defensive coordinator -- for the same position under then-ACP head coach Myron Blueford.

Blueford stepped down following the 2023 season, clearing the path for Vaught to take over. The Knights went 8-4 with Vaught as the defensive coordinator, making a run to the 4A quarterfinals. This past season, with Vaught leading the way, they opened the year with a blowout loss to Crown Point, a powerhouse in Indiana.

The Knights then proceeded to blowout every Arizona team in their way throughout the remainder of the season. They advanced to their first 4A title game in program history, losing to up-and-coming Mica Mountain.

"While I am saddened to see Coach Vaught step away from this role, I deeply respect his choise and want to express my heartfelt gratitude for all he has contributed to our program," Bickes wrote. "Through his leadership, dedication, sacrifice, and passion for the game and. his athletes, he guided our team to its first-ever state championship appearance.

"His impact on our program has been extraordinary, and we are profoundly grateful for his efforts."

The opening comes amidst a time where many schools are narrowing down their search for new leaders of their football programs. Chandler announced it was hiring Ty Wisdom in December. Casteel announced Monday it had hired former Lewis and Clark College coach Joe Bushman.

Corona del Sol hired Eric Lauer from Mountain Pointe. Now, the Pride are narrowing their search for a new leader. Other schools are expected to announce in the coming days and weeks.

"As we move forward, our focus shifts to identifying Coach Vaught's successor," Bickes wrote. "The position has been posted, and we will begin interviewing candidates in February. Our goal is not only to build on the foundation Coach Vaught has established but also to bring in a leader who will enhance opportunities for our athletes, coaches, and school community."
