The Xavier College Prep girls volleyball team brought the heat at its home court in Wednesday’s matchup against Valley Vista. The Gators added another win to their undefeated record, sweeping the Monsoon in three sets.
The Gators dominated the first set finishing with a score of 25-14, but the Monsoon gave them a challenge at the start of the second set.
The Monsoon took over with a short lead. But then, our player of the game, freshman outside hitter and opposite hitter Amari Frazier, showed what she is made of. She had a block resulting in a point for Xavier. Valley Vista answered with a kill. Then Frazier came back and had four kills in a row, boosting the lead for Xavier, giving them the motivation to dominate the rest of the set 25-11, and finish the game strong with the score of 24-14 in the third set.
Frazier ended the game with 9 kills and one block, and put on a show helping lead the team to victory. Her showcase of skills couldn’t have been done without help from her coaches and teammates.
“I listen to Coach's feedback a lot, and little tiny things, like my teammates telling me where to go, what the next play is going to be, or what the other team's tactics are, so I am able to know what's happening, and I can help them out,” Frazier said.
As one of the two freshmen on varsity, Frazier is learning as much as possible from the talented team around her as a rising star in her sport.
Another player that stood out in this game was senior opposite hitter Annemarie O’Gara. She had 12 kills and one block, helping the team stay on top of the game.
Xavier Prep is the number one ranked team in the state and will continue to strive for greatness. The school, as a whole, is the most winning high school in Arizona, meaning the school won more state championships than any other school in the state. Keep in mind, Xavier Prep is an all-girls school.
“The expectation is women pursuing excellence with class and grace, and just like we do in the classroom, we expect that on the court,” Xavier Prep Head Coach Lamar-Renee Bryant said.
The volleyball team will continue carrying out traditions and try adding to the school’s legacy this season. However, The Gators know that they still have to compete to the best of their abilities each game day.
“We take things day-by-day. We work with a mental performance coach, as well as, we don’t look too far in front of us. Right now our focus is Desert Vista,” Bryant said.
